Automation or AutomatedControl describes a range of technologies that reduce human intervention in processes. Human intervention is minimized by pre-defining decision criteria, sub-process relationships, and related actions – and embodying those previous determinations in machines.
Automation, including the use of various control systems to operate equipment such as machinery, factory processes, boilers and heat treatment furnaces, telephony switching, steering and stabilization ships, aircraft, and other applications and vehicles with human intervention.
Automation covers applications ranging from household thermostats controlling boilers, to large industrial control systems with tens of thousands of input measurements and output control signals. In terms of control complexity, it can range from simple on-off controls to multivariable high-level algorithms.
